چکیده

Feature-based conditional statistical methods are essential for the analysis of complex, large-scale data. We introduce two shape-based conditional analysis algorithms that can be deployed in complementary settings: local methods are required when the phenomena under study comprise many small intermittent features, while global shape methods are required to study large-scale structures. We present the algorithms in context with their motivating combustion science case studies, but we note that the methods are applicable to a broad class of physics-based phenomena.

Microwave-Assisted Solution Combustion Synthesis of WO3 Nanoparticles: Optical and Colorimetric Characteristics

Tungsten oxide (WO3) and tungsten oxide hydrate (WO3.H2O) nanoparticles were synthesized via microwave-assisted solution combustion in comparison with the acidic precipitation method. Oxalic acid was used as a surfactant and forming agent in the acidic precipitation method. In addition to oxalic acid, glycine and citric acid were also used as fuels in the microw...

Direct numerical simulations and analysis of three-dimensional n-heptane spray flames in a model swirl combustor

Three-dimensional n-heptane spray flames in a swirl combustor are investigated by means of direct numerical simulation (DNS) to provide insight into realistic spray evaporation and combustion as well as relevant modeling issues. The variable-density, low-Mach number Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a fully conservative and kinetic energy conserving finite difference scheme in cylindrica...

Modeling autoignition in non-premixed turbulent combustion using a stochastic flamelet approach

In this paper, a stochastic flamelet approach is used to model autoignition in an initially non-premixed medium in isotropic and decaying turbulence, using a one-step irreversible reaction. This configuration corresponds to the DNS data from Sreedhara and Lakshmisha [Proc. Combust. Inst. 29 (2002) 2069]. The system can be described by the flamelet equations for the temperature and fuel mass fra...

An algorithm for LES of premixed compressible flows using the Conditional Moment Closure model

A novel numerical method has been developed to couple a recent high order accurate fully compressible upwind method with the Conditional Moment Closure combustion model. The governing equations, turbulence modelling and numerical methods are presented in full. The new numerical method is validated against Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data for a lean premixed methane slot burner. Although t...

DNS of droplet evaporation and combustion in a swirling combustor

Turbulent multi-phase combustion is encountered in a number of engineering applications, such as internal combustion engines and gas-turbine aircraft engines. Therefore, the ability to perform accurate numerical simulations of these systems is of paramount importance to improve their design and efficiency. However, the underlying physics of spray combustion are extremely complicated. The liquid...
